Paddling Map Cases for the Readable Window and Exact Water Rating

Compare the folded chart window and stated protection level instead of assuming every waterproof case can be immersed.

We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.

A map case has to keep the required chart section visible while meeting the documented exposure conditions. Its outside dimensions and a broad waterproof label are not enough. Measure the folded chart, identify the protection rating and plan a permitted attachment arrangement before choosing a size.

Measure the chart section you need to see

Fold the actual map or chart to the intended section and measure it without trimming useful information. Compare the clear interior window with the case maker's table. NRS lists window dimensions separately from overall dimensions, showing why an external rectangle is not the same as readable map area. Leave the closure space required by the instructions rather than filling every available edge.

Decide whether both sides need to be readable and whether the chart will be refolded during the activity. A larger case can display more information but occupies more space on the boat. Check the supported attachment points and ensure the case does not cover controls or interfere with the instructed paddling arrangement. A case protects a document; it does not supply navigation knowledge.

Read protection language precisely

Aquapac's cited large map case expressly states IPX6 and says it is not suitable for immersion. That distinction is more useful than the word waterproof in a search title. Compare each candidate's own rating and conditions, and obtain a different documented product if the intended exposure exceeds them. Do not extend a rating from the maker's phone or paddle case to its map case.

Imagine a buyer comparing one storm-protection map case with a case documented for a different water exposure. Write the expected conditions beside each specification and eliminate any unsupported pairing. Then compare readable area and attachment method among the suitable options. The scenario does not certify a route or predict whether equipment will be submerged; it keeps the purchase within the manufacturer's stated limits.

Make sealing and care repeatable

Read the closure procedure and any recommended empty-case check before inserting documents. NRS describes seal cleaning and maintenance, while Aquapac supplies its own instructions; do not mix care products or techniques between materials without permission. Check whether pens used for navigation markings are compatible with the window. The cited Aquapac page specifically cautions against solvent-based pens on its TPU material.

US charts and European map formats can fold to different useful outlines. Measure the actual document rather than buying by its paper-series name. Confirm local availability of the selected size, supplied attachments and warranty terms. Keep the closure directions with the case and allow it to dry as instructed. This guide reports no independent water-ingress test and makes no claim that protected paperwork alone makes an outing suitably planned.
